PEFC/MTCC CERTIFICATION
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international, non-profit organization that promotes sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. With more than 700 million acres certified worldwide, PEFC is the largest global forest certification system.
PEFC works by endorsing national programs—like Malaysia’s Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC)—ensuring they meet strict international sustainability benchmarks.
Established in 1998, MTCC is an independent organization governed by representatives from academia, research institutions, industry, and government. MTCC was the world’s first certification program for tropical forests. Blue Star operates under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS). This certification verifies that:
- All logs are legally sourced from independently audited forest concessions
- Forests are managed under internationally recognized sustainability practices

In 2009, MTCS received full PEFC endorsement, confirming compliance with global standards. Many companies hold Chain of Custody certification, but that just means they are qualified to handle certified timber. It doesn’t mean that everything they sell is certified. Blue Star is different.
Because we operate under MTCS and maintain Chain of Custody certification, you are always buying certified products when you buy from Blue Star.
SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY PRACTICES
All commercial timber lands in Malaysia are State-owned. There are no privately owned timber lands.
Permanent Reserved Forests (PRF) across the nation form the foundation of long-term, sustainable forestry in Malaysia. These forests, accounting for 44% of the nation's total land area, are managed by individual States for multiple uses—including conservation, wildlife protection, and responsible timber production.
Hands-On Approach
Unlike most others in the industry, Blue Star does not rely on third-party suppliers. We directly bid on and operate timber concessions within the PRF—giving us full control over how our timber is sourced.
- 100% PRF-Sourced: All Blue Star timber comes exclusively from designated, company-operated concessions within the PRF
- Direct Concession Ownership & Operation: We obtain harvesting rights through an open public bidding process—similar to that used by the U.S. Forest Service—and manage operations ourselves
Science-Based Forestry
- Selective Harvest: Only 1–2 trees per acre are harvested. Harvestable trees are carefully selected by government foresters based on scientific forestry principles—not commercial value.
- Natural Regeneration: Increased sunlight after harvesting triggers new growth that reflects the natural species makeup of the forest.
- No Clear Cutting: Forest ecosystems remain intact—natural forests are never replaced with single-species plantations.
- Long Recovery Cycle: Each area is given 50 years to regenerate before harvesting can occur again.
THE RESULT:
A continuously renewing forest. A fully traceable supply chain. High-performance timber backed by globally recognized certification.
