Dark Red Meranti: A Classification, Not a Species
Botanical names identify a wood by genus and species (e.g., Shorea platyclados). Trade names—like Seraya or Meranti Bukit—are local names for a type of wood.
All meranti comes from the Shorea genus, which includes ~175 species across Southeast Asia. These species may look similar, but their performance characteristics can vary widely.
“Dark Red Meranti” is not a single species—it’s a performance-based category. To qualify, a species must meet specific standards for:
- Density
- Hardness
- Decay and rot resistance
Dark red meranti is considered a superior product to red meranti.
What Blue Star Uses
Blue Star products are manufactured using three select Shorea species that meet Dark Red Meranti standards:
- Shorea Curtisii (Seraya)
- Shorea Platyclados (Meranti bukit)
- Shorea Pauciflora (Nemesu)
These 3 species are similar in appearance and are interchangeable. They are produced individually (not mixed) to ensure consistency.
Dark Red Meranti vs. Mahogany
Dark Red Meranti and mahogany are often compared, but they are distinct materials with different origins and botanical classifications.
Dark Red Meranti comes from the Shorea genus in Southeast Asia, while true mahogany refers to species within the Swietenia genus, native to Central and South America. Although they may share similarities in appearance and application, they differ in structure and classification.
The terms “Philippine Mahogany” and "Mahogany" are sometimes used in the trade to describe Meranti, reflecting their visual similarities-- not direct Botanical relationships.
Why Dark Red Meranti?
There are many options for hardwood decking. For example, Ipe has long been valued for its hardness, beauty, and strength. However, high demand for Ipe and many other tropical hardwoods has resulted in limited supply, elevated costs, and ecological strain from overharvesting.
Modern forestry best practices emphasize species diversification to maintain healthy forest ecosystems and ensure long-term material availability. For 40 years, Blue Star has paved the way in sustainable harvesting - keeping our supply chain steady and our prices stable. Dark Red Meranti is a high-grade option that offers:
- Greater workability compared to ultra-dense hardwoods
- Natural beauty and durability in interior and exterior applications
- Sustainable sourcing from regulated forests
- Affordability due to carefully managed harvesting practices
The result is a hardwood that offers performance, workability, and sustainability—without the limitations associated with irresponsibly harvested wood.
